Well the time of the year we all fear is here… Mercury turns Retrograde today! Mercury stays in retrograde until November 1st. It’s the time to slow life down, to dot all your “i’s” and cross all your “t’s “ in a conscious manner.
Let’s move from a place of fearing this energy to working with it constructively. It’s understanding the patterns and the cycles in our lives that counts! You will have to figure out for yourself how Mercury retrograde affects your life as it is unique for each of us according to our individual birth charts and then how we choose to respond to the cards God has dealt us.
Mercury or Hermes is the planet of communication and short distance travel. So when Mercury goes retrograde matters dealing with communication and travel such as running for errands can get messed up. The problem is this darling communication planet goes retrograde three times a year for close to three weeks each time. Yikes! That’s approximately the same ratio as the awake-sleep cycle in our lives. This is NO accident then. Coincidences are like that – sign posts pointing “the way” along the soul’s journey highway.
So what exactly happens during Mercury Retrograde time? Anything to do with communication, travel and contracts you will have to “RE” something or other to. So some verbs that go with this cycle are rewrite, redo, redefine, repair, replace, return. Yah it’s a pain because Mercury makes you re-examine different matters that you preferto deal with efficiently and one time only. It’s just not going to happen during this time!
Here are just some of the multitude of problems that arise during this time. Never buy anything major like a vehicle or furniture or a new computer during Mercury retrograde time. It will be a lemon and you will never be satisfied with it. When it turns retrograde you do not hear the message clearly and things are mis-communicated. You get the furniture home and discover it is the wrong color or the wrong size and you have to take it back to the store. Computer problems statistically speaking occur with greater frequency during Mercury retrograde.
How can you effectively make use of Mercury Retrograde time? A friend of mine chooses this time to help her go within and rewrite things she creates professionally. I choose to take web design courses during Mercury Retrograde because I don’t resent spending time redoing minute detail stuff. Paying attention to detail is not my forte, so I'm grateful for Mercury Retrograde assistance to get me to where I want to go. I'm always happy with the end result since Mercury Retrograde gives me the patience to rewrite and rewrite until whatever I'm working on reaches my desired perfection. Another friend of mine is studying for an arduous exam at this time – bonus for her since she will be willing to study over and over some pretty tedious and boring stuff.
Empower yourself and work with the Mercury Retrograde energy over the next three weeks. Otherwise you will spin your wheels and get frustrated about stuff. Use this time for re-thinking, re-planning and re-drawing your plans. It’s much better to re-frame, laugh with the energy and bide your time to move forward after November 1st!
I would love to hear your Mercury retrograde stories! Now knowing about it, how does this energy affect you personally?

Astrology New Moon in Libra
With both the Sun and the Moon in Libra today, let’s hope the politicians are making lots of laws over the next couple of days. At least they will look at all sides of the issue and not just the lobbyist side or the special interest group.
Libra is also making a New Moon Cycle for the next couple of weeks. That’s the cycle that comes once a year. The New Moon time is a time of beginning of things, of planting seeds of thought. This is prime time for you to consciously think of a plan, make the plan, say an affirmation for that plan and initiate that plan into action.
Libra is all about balance, and juggling things. Since it is a dance of juggling, Libra energy has difficulties making decisions. So that will likely be your next couple of days. Emotionally you will want to know how you possibly can balance work, play, home life, and love. Those issues will be front and center for many of us. So this is prime time for your annual assessment of weeding out what is working for you and discarding what is not. It’s not that you can’t make these decisions at other times. It’s just the prime Moon cycle time for setting the stage for the next year of your life in these specific matters.
We’ll throw in a dose of love and charm since Venus rules Libra. You will be ever so considerate and respectful at the office and at home. You will more easily see the other person’s point of view. So set up meetings with those people you find difficult to deal with. You have an issue to resolve with your kid? Now is the prime time to discuss so your child can see your point of view. Oh, and you just might be able to see your child’s point of view too. This moon energy is about understanding and getting behind the other person’s eyes on how s/he views the world. You are more likely to have a win-win result since you both want to be emotionally agreeable during this time.
Libra sun folks are obsessed with being in love. Libra Moon people are even more so. All of the rest of us likely will find, we want our partner to demonstrate that s/he loves us in tangible ways. Yup, these words will reverberate in more than one conversation among couples. “Show me the evidence by your actions” or “actions speak louder than words”. Be prepared and do four really nice things for your honey that makes him know you love him. Men – flowers work for most gals. However sugar coated words “How do I love thee, let me tell you four reasons why I love you” works better during these next two days!
Only problem for today’s energy is the lack of deciding which way to go … which road do I take… which plan will work best for me. Hmm, seems eenie, meenie minney, mo from your childhood singsong days, or tossing a coin might be the simplest way for you to finally decide.

Astrology Moon in Leo
The Moon is traveling through fiery Leo for the next couple of days. In your personal environment, if you know a Leo, love a Leo, or live with a Leo housemate, then stroke their ego’s mane whenever you meet them during the next 48 hours. They are the king cats of the jungle and want people to notice how important they are. Leos figure everything they do is top priority. Of course that’s written in Leo land, but the rest of the world might not see it that way! If you placate the Leo in everyone you meet over the next two days, you will be way ahead of the game.
If you know anything about cat behavior, you have the rest of the story. Cats are adorable when they are doing what they want to do, without interference. So Leo energy will make you want to play like a kitten and purr most of the time. However, if you decide you want a cat to follow your lead, you are misguided. They are the leaders, in their opinion. As such, their agenda is much more important than yours ever will be. They will turn quickly, unsheathe their claws and pounce letting you know who is in authority. Be wary of the Leo roars you might hear over the next couple of days.
Leo is fire energy so you will be able to complete your to-do list more easily during Leo Moon time. Leo energy gives you that extra strength to shoulder more responsibility and demonstrate clear leadership skills. If you want to impress the boss on a major project, now is the time to make her sit up and take notice of your awesome talents. If you have been too timid to voice your opinion on something, use this Leo energy to speak up and be heard.
Leo energy is generous. So it is a time to help out that person in the office and let them in on the secret to your success! They have been admiring you, so help them out. You will want to share things with others during the next 48 hours. Leo Moon energy will make you passionate about the things you love. It is possible that you will exaggerate about how marvelous you are during this time. Everything is bigger in Leo land after all.
Leo is the prima dona. Being noticed makes you happy during this time. Your fantasy is being totally pampered and adored by others during this moon time. You might have to empower yourself and pamper yourself if others don’t understand how to harness the energy of Leo moon! Isn’t it fabulous that you do? Purr-purr.
You are what you repeatedly do.
Excellence is not an event - it is a habit."

Happiness is your Wolf Pack!
My husband and I are determined to live a purposeful life. It’s self-empowering when you take responsibility for your life events rather than look to others to complete you, fulfill you or make decisions for you. Similarly, when you resort to blaming others for what is happening in your life, it should tell you that you have put your personal power in the hands of others. We can learn a lot from the wolf pack behavior.
I’m grateful when I hear the haunting songs of wolves at night or early in the morning. They sing loudly enough that we can hear them over the tv or background noise within the farm house. The wolves raise their powerful voices singing joyously to the Moon. I’m more apt to hear the optimistic yipping and yapping of the curious coyotes who lounge around frequently in our fields. Both species bring me that Moment of Joy when I’m privileged to hear them, usually on a daily basis. I throw open the windows so their song is more audible. Their songs resonate deeply in my soul. These are all part of the canine family and have similar traits since our dogs descended from wolves say the scientists.
Wolves have one alpha or primary female leader and one alpha or male leader in their group. The alpha female and male lead the pack in all major family decisions. Wolves have got it right! They know it takes the energy balance of a female and a male perspective on decision making in a family unit. Where are we going to go for supper tonight? What neighborhood are we going to explore next? When are we going to move to a new location? How are we going to bring down that deer? The leaders in the family do NOT look to their children to tell them what to do and how to live their lives. In other words the leaders are in control. The pack is reliant on the alpha leaders experience and wisdom to keep them alive in their world.
Wolves are loyal and honest with other members of the pack. When there is a disagreement, they don’t disappear alone sulking into the forest. That’s animal suicide. Instead there is a sharp nip on the flank or on the nose to bring the offending behavior into alignment with what is acceptable to that wolf pack. They might be chased to a section of the woods and are told to cool their jets for awhile and think about their behavior. In effect they are given a time-out by the pack. Sometimes we have to do that with the members of our wolf pack. Explain why the behavior is not acceptable and give the offender a time-out to think about why he or she is not welcome to hang out with the family until that person chooses to change his or her behavior. To ignore unacceptable or poor behavior weakens your entire pack.
Often in wolf packs, the yearling uncles and aunts look after the new pup litter that is born each year. They will babysit while the alpha pair is making the living leading the pack. Each member of the pack has an equal share in raising the kids. Wolves were the originators of the term “It takes a community to raise a young pup”. The parents, the aunts, the uncles, the cousins are involved equally in child rearing. That way the wolf cubs consistently understand the guiding principles under which their family operates.
So you aren’t living near your own family to have this happen? Every place you live become part of an extended family. In essence this becomes part of your wolf pack in the neighborhood in which you life. Ensure there is an older alpha female and alpha male whom you can turn to for wise advice in living a purposeful life. Ensure there are truly honest and loyal friends who won’t lead you astray. For heaven sakes nip that child on the nose within 10 seconds of their misbehaving so the child will understand which behavior is not appropriate for the pack! The children need be told that to survive in the world you have to be respectful of all others who live in the forest with them.
Who are the alpha female and the alpha male in your family? They are not necessarily the oldest, but they have earned the right by being the wisest in terms of life experiences and survival. I have a serious disconnect with families where the kids under the age of 30 are leading the pack. Kids lack life experience for knowing what is best for the family and for themselves. So why would any wolf pack give the kids the power to run the show for the family unit? Who is leading your family pack?

Astrology: Moon in Cancer
The mystical Moon is traveling through her own sign for the next couple of days. This is woman’s power time of the 28 day moon cycle, so use the Moon energy wisely! The Moon is a huge emotional crayon coloring our world and triggering certain feelings in us as she makes her monthly cycle through different signs. The Moon in Cancer is a water sign, so emotions could be running away with you for the next couple of days. Water needs to be contained to use it in the best way possible.
Family ties are super important at this time. You will find that you want to be home with your family during Moon in Cancer. It is the time you tend to be overly obsessive about your kids, about your partner, about the palace where you hang your hat at night, and about everything that family and home life means to you. If you can’t physically be with your family because we Canadians move so much, then call and have a chat with them. Just reach out and touch the people you hold dear to you, whether they are family or extended family.
Probably you will be more emotional about what ever issues arise over the next couple of days. You will worry about stuff that ordinarily you could shrug off. Know that in a couple of days, you will see the issue without being emotional, so hold off on that decision your teenager is pressing for! If you need the healing power of tears, now it will be easier to shed them, if you’ve been a toughie trying to be strong. Nope, shed those tears, as that’s what God made them for… to help us get through emotional trials of life.
Empower yourself! Women, pamper yourself during this Moon in Cancer time. You so deserve a special treat! For example I spontaneously bought fresh flowers to have in the house, just because it brings me happiness. I love the beauty of roses and I adore the smell. Men you would be wise to pamper your significant other by being more grateful or thoughtful. She will remember those lovely little things you say more during these two days than she will all month.
This is an awesome time to plan a home-cooked meal because people appreciate the extra effort it takes. Make your honey something that they always rave about their mothers making and you’ll be making brownie points! Your dreams will likely be more vivid during these next couple of days. You will have heightened intuition. Pay attention to what the universe is trying to tell you! Enjoy the loving Moon in Cancer energy! Take this opportunity to be kind to others!
"Kind words do not cost much.
They never blister the tongue or lips.
They make other people good-natured.
They also produce their own image on men's souls,
and a beautiful image it is."

Joy in Creating your own Heaven
Several years ago one of my spiritual “sisters” made me really think. She asked me, “if I could paint my perfect heaven, what would it look like?” She went on to suggest that I choose the four most important things for me to have in my personal heaven. What a tough question! However, once I listed what I personally require to define a place as heaven, I made an amazing discovery. I had already created it on earth! That discovery certainly helped me to be more content with the life I had chosen to create for myself.
We then went on to have a discussion of what people believe heaven looks like.
I’ve thought about that over the years and shared with many people. My question to you is, if you haven’t got the four most important things that matter to you in your heaven, what are you waiting for?
So here’s your challenge for yourself today.
List 4 things you would find in your heaven.
List 4 people you would find in your heaven.
List 4 events that you want to do in your heaven.
What color is your heaven?
What smells give you joy that are in your heaven?
Once you do this exercise, you might surprise yourself just as I did. The angels I have around me, I call close friends. Empower yourself. Create your heaven on earth!
'Twenty years from now
you will be more disappointed by the things
that you didn't do
than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails........

Astrology-Moon in Gemini
Did you notice last night that you couldn’t stop thinking about stuff? Did you find yourself see-sawing from one point of view to another? The Moon has moved into Gemini, the twins, for the next couple of days. Consequently we are of two minds about everything and it’s hard to nail down a conclusive answer. Since we are in the two week cycle following the full Moon, it is prime time for you to be completing tasks you started during the two weeks following the New Moon.
Likely you will find yourself quick-witted as your mind does mental gymnastics for the next couple of days. You might have difficulty sleeping as a result. The problem might be that mentally you will be playing leap frog from one topic to another. In other words, you might find it difficult to focus on one topic for very long. Your brain will be flying ahead of yourself as the Moon makes it monthly cycle through Gemini.
Take advantage of the Moon in Gemini energy! This is a time for you to soar through the use of your imagination. Creativity is racing through your veins. Harness that and you have the potential of dazzling those around you with your new ideas.
Mercury rules Gemini so you will want to communicate those ideas to people who are important to you. During this time you will increase your chances of being heard. However, remember everyone around you also is awash with ideas. Be clear on your message. Empower yourself and get those creative ideas down on paper before the Moon leaves Gemini tomorrow!
"You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things –
to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap,
sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals."
[Sir Edmund Hillary]

Spirituality & Maple Leaf Theory
Most people go on a spiritual journey at some point throughout their lives. They quest for the answers to the unknown. In my decades long quest, I now believe that one has to find the belief system that fits with your own soul.
At the age of eight I rejected organized religion, although I was forced to attend church every Sunday. At age eight however, I was told that animals’ souls did not go to heaven. Now at the wise age of eight, I knew that could never be true. My personal heaven has to include my beloved animals or I would not want to be there. So at age eight I had a serious disconnect from organized protestant religion and began my personal quest.
I do believe that the journey is a process. One has to find what fits one’s soul for various stages of age and life development. In my twenties I proudly carried the atheist placard. Now I know that you have to tear down the structures in order to rebuild afresh. This is Pluto energy that forces one to destroy what has always been a part of your life, so that you get a fresh and new beginning. We all go through the death/rebirth and like the phoenix we rise again to a higher level of thought and emotion.
In my thirties, I investigated all the world’s greatest religions since the beginning of mankind. So I expanded and examined every conceivable notion. Then I began to narrow my focus, by discarding what just did not fit for me and my soul’s journey this lifetime.
I’m just a simple country gal. So to me it all boils down to the Maple Leaf theory. It’s a four stage process.
The leaf is born as a bud in the spring time.
The leaf grows and expands.
The leaf matures turning gorgeous colors. This is the signal to all others in it’s world environment that it has arrived at long last by gaining its spiritual wisdom.
It falls off the tree laying down it’s life to feed the roots of the tree with energy. It provides nourishment to all who come after.
No energy is ever lost. The energy of the maple leaf is recycled. God/Universe/Creator is the original recycler of all energy in the Universe.
Tell me about your spiritual journey. Where were your thoughts at different decades of your life?
"All things are possible until they are proved impossible –
and even the impossible may only be so, as of now."
[Pearl S. Buck; 1892-1973, Novelist’]

Astrology Moon in Taurus
The Moon in Taurus or the bull is hanging around for the next couple of days. Use its energy wisely! It’s a time to be persistent about things that matter to you.
Everyone knows how stubborn bulls are. I have a black angus bull in my field right now that just won’t go home. He has the freedom to leave as the gate is open. Dogs chasing him won’t make him leave. Me chasing him, won’t make him leave. Nope he’s content to just hang out and chow down. Bulls are … well, bullish, and slow to move on anything. Bulls also don’t like being pulled out of their rut. Expect that behavior from humans as well. Most people will want routine over the weekend rather than trying anything new.
This Taurus Moon energy is the time when people will be bull-headed about stuff and just won’t want to change their opinions. If you are trying to get someone to see your point of view on something important to you, now is not the time to do it. However if you phrase your proposition in terms of the practical and cost saving measures, you just might be able to make your idea fly.
Taurus Moon time means that you want to deal with money. Taurus energy is usually found around banks and financial institutions. So it’s a great time to get your financial house in order. You’ll find it easier emotionally to part with your cash and pay down your debt. It’s a great time to plan where your money is going to go for the next 28 days.
For those folks who usually are like rabbits hopping from thing to thing and chasing rabbit trails instead of following through – harness the Taurus Moon energy! Do you have some pesky jobs that you just never get around to completing? Moon in Taurus comes to the rescue! So set a goal for the weekend. Once you start a task, you increase your chances of finishing it. Hooray, that definitely is a Moment of Joy!
Beware though. If someone around you starts pawing the ground in frustration, back off. Slow to anger, once the bull starts moving, it’s difficult to slow that energy down.
Here is a quote that exudes Taurus energy!
“There is genius in persistence.
It conquers all opposers.
It gives confidence.
It annihilates obstacles.
Everybody believes in a determined man.
People know that when he undertakes a thing,
The battle is half won,
For his rule is to accomplish whatever he sets out to do.”
[Orison Swett Marden, 1850-1924]

Happiness is a Habit You Choose
I truly believe that Happiness is a habit we choose. Is the glass half empty or half full? So far, there is no research evidence for a happiness gene in the Humane Genome project yet. Research suggests that 60% of who we are we inherited from our parents. The other 40% comes from our environment. I don’t have much control over the genetic blueprint I inherited. However as an adult, I have control over the environment I choose to live in, the people I associate with and where I focus my energy.
Therefore I can choose to make my life more fulfilled and more enriched by choosing to find happiness each day. Yup, I’m a detective on the hunt each day for something that will bring me joy and happiness. I consciously seek it out. I consciously manipulate my environment to make Moments of Joy happen. I begin my day with an affirmation of finding happiness and joy. As life weaves it’s way throughout the day, I reframe the day’s events by asking myself what is “happy about this situation?” In other words, I expect to find the good in every event that occurs.
If you surround yourself with people who focus on the positive, you also will focus on the positive. You can empower yourself by distancing yourself from people who are chronically negative. Their energy just drags you down. So why not begin choosing a better life for yourself this moment? You deserve the best the universe has to offer! Say an affirmation. Say a prayer telling Creator/God/Universe that you choose Happiness and Joy as a Habit for your life.
"I live a day at a time.
Each day I look for a kernel of excitement.
In the morning, I say: 'What is my exciting thing for today?'
Then, I do the day. Don't ask me about tomorrow."

Spirituality, Human Consciousness & 100th Monkey Theory
You all are aware the Earth energy is shifting. This is changing life as we know it on Mother Earth. You feel it in your bones. You know it in your heart and soul. We are bombarded with articles on Global Warming. While the earth is being physically affected, we humans are being affected physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. We are reading each other’s energy more frequently at a distance. Thus when someone is deeply affected emotionally in Afghanistan, then so are we at a subconscious level.
Sound far out? Research demonstrates clearly that it is not. We are all inter-connected on the Web of Life. We are all ONE. A few years ago, I came across this information on a Global Consciousness study. See this website if you wish to delve further. [http://noosphere.princeton.edu/story.html]. Roger Nelson, the primary researcher, is doing a phenomenal job of tracking how we humans are reacting to global events. I’ve been following his results monthly. His research defies logic as it supports that we are communicating with one another globally without any visible form of a mechanism to communicate. There is a ripple effect around the globe in nanoseconds when some major tragedy occurs. This was documented with events like the death of Princess Diana and the tsunami in Asia a couple of years ago. World wide we were horrified and upset together. Conversely world wide we cheered enthusiastically when the moment in time of the year 2000 came up. Hmm, human emotions being read on a global scale?
So what is behind this life inter-connection that appears to be growing stronger as the Earth shifts? I suggest to you it has its roots in the 100th Monkey Theory! This is something that is being taught to people training to be psychologists.
The Hundredth Monkey by Ken Keyes Jr
The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years. In 1952, on the Island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but found the dirt unpleasant. An 18 month old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in the salty ocean water, improving the taste of the potato. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates learned this trick and taught their mothers too. This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by numerous monkeys in the troop and observed by the scientists.
Between 1952 and 1958, all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes and make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this cultural improvement. Other adult monkeys kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes. In autumn of 1958, something startling took place. A certain number of Koshima monkeys were already washing their sweet potatoes, the exact number is not known. The hypothetical number given was 99. Then it happened. The hundredth monkey learned to wash the sweet potatoes. The added energy of that hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough. Almost everyone in the tribe was washing their potatoes before eating them, but a surprising occurrence was observed by these scientists. The habit of washing the sweet potato had jumped overseas when the monkeys hadn’t met each other. Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop at Takaskiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.
Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of individuals knows a ‘new way’, it remains the conscious property of those individuals. However, when one more individual manifests this new awareness, the energy field is strengthened, a critical mass is reached, and the awareness becomes the conscious property of all living beings. This new awareness is communicated mind to mind.
Do you find that when the phone rings you know exactly who is on it? Or you are thinking of someone and they call minutes later. That’s the 100th Monkey theory in action! What do you think are going to be the implications for us humans? How is this affecting your life personally?

Astrology Full Harvest Moon in Aries/Mars
This lovely autumn harvest moon hangs in the sky this morning. There is a slight ring around her. My farmer grandfather used to say that meant moisture was on its way.
I’ve spent a lifetime being fascinated by every phase of the Moon and how it influences human behavior. Understanding the Moon phases and how people react when the Moon is in different signs, assists me in understanding the energy that is “out-there” for the day. I spent twenty plus years as a specialist, working with special needs children. For several years I enjoyed the challenges and rewards of helping teens cope with extreme behaviors. Knowing the Moon sign helped me to understand the probably emotional response I would be dealing with that day.
Are you ready for the battles that might just occur today? Do you find you are a little more impatient with those around you? Are you impatient with yourself? Full Moons will do that to you. When you add into the mix the Aries Moon ruled by Mars, the God of War, be forewarned! Count to ten more frequently today before you say or do something you really shouldn’t. It is plain tough to keep from showing your impatience and warrior part of your psyche during the Aries/Mar Full Moon. I’m grateful he only appears once a year!
Aries/Mars stands for your personal will. For the next couple of weeks you are more apt to push for your personal agenda as you work through completing things. You can choose to make the best use of the two weeks after the Full Moon as it wanes towards the New Moon. Full Moons stand for finishing off things. So these next two weeks are part of a cycle of Mother Earth’s rhythms for completing projects more easily.
Do you want to set boundaries with someone but have difficulty doing it? Aries Moon will help you do that. Do you have a lot of errands to run over the next couple of days? Aries Moon will help you do that. Aries is fire energy, so juggling numerous task will be easier to accomplish. Do you need to be more assertive with someone? Then harness the Aries energy for the next couple of days and stand your ground. But remember … words can leave lifetime scars.

Happiness & Joy defined
What is the difference between joy and happiness? In my experience, happiness is the underlying music of contentment. Happiness is more quiet when compared to joy. Happiness is the constant heartbeat while Joy is experienced as bubble bursts of pure enjoyment. Those moments are thundering, louder and last a shorter time.
It is by understanding these concepts that you enhance your spiritual journey. Living a positive life is a choice!
Which is more memorable? You decide!

Gift bags save the Environment
To use something once and throw it away is no longer supported by Mother Earth. You can help repair her spirit by doing your part as the Power of One. Part of my spiritual journey is to share some tried and true strategies.
Trees are the lungs of our planet. The local native elders say the reason we now have more wind in this area is because we are harvesting too many mature trees. I found it interesting in the CBC news article last night on global warming in the north, the people in Nunavut are also now experiencing more winds.
Yikes! 3 months from today it is Christmas Day. For a Taurus who likes to plan methodically, that’s a short timespan. 100% of my Christmas shopping is done throughout the year prior to December. I locate treasures that I believe will bring moments of joy to my family and extended family. Angels ~ I have so many angels in my life and I try to find unique angels to give them each year. Before I retired from my career, I used to make my angel friends their angel gifts. Now that I’m retired, I don’t have as much time to be creative with crafts, etc. Go figure!!
So here’s an alternative for you for Christmas and year round gift giving. It’s my favorite environmental practice that I have been doing since the early 1980’s. Refuse to put any gifts in wrapping paper and refuse to buy cards. I sew, so this is easy for me. I make cloth gift bags for different occasions and crotchet the “ribbon” to close them. Each bag takes about an hour from beginning to end. For people I give to yearly, I have cross-stitched cutsy gift tags that are returned to me every year – again saving paper. For my grandchildren, I cross stitch the year of their first Christmas as well as their name.
I commit to making 10 gift bags a year to give away outside our extended family or tribal circle. Over the years I have influenced more than twenty families to go wrapping paper free so they too are using cloth gift bags. Our tribe collectively must be saving some trees every year as a result.
Now here’s the additional benefit! By having a variety of fabric gift bags on hand of all sizes, it saves time! The tags are all made and attached to the gift bags. So as I acquire treasures for people, I just put them in the gift bags. When it comes time to mail things out – voila – it’s all ready with little fuss. Yup, time efficient too.
Hey men, my 30 year old nephew has now been making his own gift bags by hand for the past 5 years – hand sewing because his wife, his mother and I are so adamant about using gift bags. So no excuses now!
